Louvre Roof Pergola – Sydney – DIY Outdoor Living
BBQ Sauna Spa – Project Showcase
Intro
A Sydney homeowner turned a bare corner of their backyard into a covered wellness retreat, with a spa, sauna, BBQ and outdoor dining area, all under a freestanding Noosa louvre roof pergola they installed themselves.
Modern Roofs supplies custom-sized DIY louvre roof pergola kits to all Greater Sydney suburbs as well as across NSW. These can be picked up from Sydney warehouse.

The brief: one covered space for spa, sauna and dining
The owners wanted their spa, sauna, BBQ and dining table together in one outdoor room they could use all year. That meant shelter from Sydney’s summer sun and heavy rain, without trapping the heat and steam from the spa and sauna.
They also wanted it usable after dark, and a clean, modern look against a lush garden of banana palms and tropical planting.
Starting point: a new concrete slab
The project began with a freshly poured concrete slab, set beside a retaining wall at the back of the garden. A level slab is the simplest base for a freestanding louvre roof: the posts fix straight down, with no separate footings to dig. Please consult your structural engineer for suitable slab design for your project or get in touch with us.

Why a freestanding Noosa louvre roof
The Noosa louvre roof suited this project for four reasons:
- Freestanding Single Bay Design: the retreat sits away from the house, so the pergola stands on its own four posts with nothing to attach to. Large Single Bay avoids middle posts.
- Adjustable louvres: the blades open to let heat and steam from the spa and sauna escape, and close for shade or rain. Integrated gutters carry rainwater away from the space.
- Integrated LED lighting: lights built into the beams make the space usable well into the evening.
- Custom sizing: the kit was made to fit the slab exactly, approx. 6x4m, in a GREY frame that matches the charcoal fence and outdoor furniture.
DIY installation
The kit arrived pre-fabricated, clearly labelled and with step-by-step assembly instructions. Customer completed the installation in 3-5 days with help from friends. With the slab already in place, the work was assembly only: no digging, no footings.
See how the kits go together on our louvre roof pergola assembly page. Prefer not to do it yourself? Where available, we can connect you with an installer in our network for a quote.

The result: a backyard retreat used day and night
The finished space holds a spa, a sauna, a hanging egg chair, a BBQ and a four-seat dining table, all under one roof. At dusk the LED lights wash the slab in soft light, while the open louvres frame the banana palms behind.

“We installed the large 6m x 4m pergola over much of a day with the help of some friends and we were all very impressed with the design and overall quality and appearance of the pergola. It is very attractive and robust — well designed and engineered … We found the process from ordering to installing quite easy, the documentation was very good and relatively easy to follow”

Frequently asked questions
Do you deliver louvre roof kits to Sydney?
Yes. Modern Roofs custom-sized DIY louvre roof kits can be picked up from Sydney warehouse for no charge – we can also arrange delivery on requested basis and across NSW.
Can you put a spa or sauna under a louvre roof?
Yes. Opening the louvres lets heat and steam escape, and closing them gives shelter from rain and sun. Check your spa or sauna maker’s clearance requirements, and use a licensed electrician for all power.
Do I need council approval for a louvre roof pergola in Sydney?
It depends on your council and your design. Some freestanding pergolas qualify as exempt development under NSW planning rules if they meet size, height and setback conditions. Check with your council or a private certifier before ordering.
Can I install a louvre roof pergola myself?
Yes. Our kits are pre-fabricated, shipped as flat pack kit, labelled and supplied with assembly instructions for confident DIYers. A level concrete slab, like the one in this project, or pad footings makes installation simpler – consult a structural engineer for design.
How much does a louvre roof pergola cost?
It depends on size, model and add-ons. See our louvre roof cost guide for more examples.
